What Is an Olympic Barbell?

An Olympic barbell is the gold standard for serious lifters, used in competitive Olympic weightlifting and elite training environments around the world. These bars are built to precise specifications — typically 7 feet long, with a 28mm diameter for men’s bars and 25mm for women’s — and are made to withstand heavy, explosive lifts like the snatch and clean & jerk.

What makes an Olympic bar unique? Smooth spin from bushings or needle bearings, carefully tuned whip (flex), and sleeves with a 2-inch diameter to fit Olympic weight plates. Whether you're training at an Olympic bar gym or building your own garage setup, it’s a must-have for dynamic, compound lifts.

Benefits of Using an Olympic Barbell

  • Competition-Level Performance: Engineered to meet international standards for length, diameter, and load capacity.
  • Smooth Rotation: Bushings or needle bearings allow the sleeves to spin freely during high-speed lifts.
  • Consistent Whip: Proper flex for power transfer without compromising control.
  • Versatility: Great for Olympic lifts, general strength training, and CrossFit workouts.

Men's vs. Women's Olympic Barbells

Not all Olympic barbells are the same.

Men’s Olympic Barbells typically weigh 20kg, with a 28mm shaft. Ideal for max lifts and explosive power.

FAQ

What’s the difference between a standard barbell and an Olympic barbell?

Olympic barbells are built to competition specs, stronger, and designed for 2” diameter Olympic weight plates. They offer better spin, whip, and load capacity, especially useful for explosive Olympic-style lifts.

Should I choose a 15kg or 20kg Olympic barbell?

15kg bars are ideal for women, beginners, or lifters with smaller hands thanks to the thinner 25mm shaft. 20kg bars are standard for men and competitive lifting. Choose based on your goals, strength level, and grip preference.

Can I use an Olympic barbell for general strength training?

Absolutely. Olympic barbells are not just for Olympic lifts — they’re also excellent for deadlifts, squats, bench presses, and overhead work. They provide smoother rotation and more durable construction than most standard bars.

What weight can an Olympic barbell hold?

Our Olympic barbells are tested to hold loads from 1000 lbs up to 1500+ lbs, depending on the model. This makes them suitable for heavy lifters and competitive athletes alike.

What accessories should I pair with my Olympic barbell?

We recommend starting with a quality set of Olympic Weight Plates, along with Collars & Clamps for secure lifting. To expand your training options, explore our Specialty Barbells and modular attachments for more variation.
